Sanctions are a fundamental element in the democracies' fight against the Russian war. For the first time since Moscow began committing massive acts of war and crime, the democracies have put in place a substantial arsenal of sanctions to reach Russia’s economic potential and to prevent it from continuing its war effort. All indications are that on both counts the sanctions are working, and even Putin has seemed to acknowledge this. Not only have the sources of oil and gas revenues diminished considerably despite purchases from powers such as India and China, but the Russian war economy is no longer able to continue its arms production to the same extent, as many of its components are not available. In fact, today 80% of the technologies are included in the EU sanctions regime.
